VFL Wolfsburg vs Bayern Munich

by Colin on Bundesliga

After the usual winter break in Germany, the Bundesliga is back this weekend for the first time in 2015. On Friday it starts with an amazing derby between the leaders in the table Bayern Munich and VFL Wolfsburg.

They started the season, they start the spring round

It is very interesting to mention that these teams have opened the season in the Bundesliga on 22 of August 2014 at Alianz Arena. The result back then was 2-1 for the Bavarians after Arjen Robben and Thomas Muller’s goals and Ivica Olic has scored for the final result and his goal is one of the only 4 goals conceded by Bayern so far in the season.

Bayern on top since August

After this win Josep Guardiola’s Bayern occupies the first position and has recorded 13 wins and only 3 draws without losing a single game. The team has a goal difference of 41-4, which is an achievement that no other team in Europe can be proud of. The Bavarians continue to be the only team in the European top flight football without a loss. During the break Bayern held their annual winter training camp in Doha, Qatar which lasted 8 days. After the camp Bayern faced the team of VFL Bochum in a friendly game played at „Rewirpower Stadion” and won it 5-1. Arjen Robben, who was celebrating his 31st birthday that day, scored twice and Dante, Mario Goetze and Sebastian Rode added 3 more goals.
In the Bundesliga, Bayern played their last game in 19th of December 2014 against the hosts from Mainz 05 and Arjen Robben was the one to score in the last seconds of the game to take the victory and the 3 points to Munich after 1-2.

Wolves on break

VFL Wolfsburg traveled for a one week training camp in Cape Town, South Africa between 11th and 18th of January. Just a day before their departure to the black continent, the club was shaken with an awful news. The Belgium defensive midfielder Junior Malanda was on his way to Braunschweig airport to join his teammates and fly to Africa with them, when the 20 years old crashed his vehicle fatally between Hannover and Bielefeld.
In the Bundesliga VFL Wolfsburg takes the second position with 34 points after 10 wins, 4 draws and 3 losses and the third best attack and the third best defensive line in the league. The Wolves are one of the three teams after Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen who don’t know the taste of the defeat at home. On the other side the Bavarians are the most successful opponent when it is up to the away games.
After the training camp in Africa the Wolves have played a friendly game at their Volkswagen Arena against Karlsruhe, won with 2-1 after Nicklas Bendtner and Maximilian Arnold goals.

Who will take the lead?

The history shows that Bayern is far more successful than its opponent in this clash, while winning 25 games against 5 draws and 3 wins for The Wolves. The last VFL Wolfsburg win at home against The Bavarians comes from 2009, their championship season. It was a 5-1 impressive victory and the former Brazilian striker Grafite and Edin Dzeko were the basis of this massive success.
