AS Roma vs Lazio
by Colin on Serie A
Stadio Olimpico is about to host the Roman derby (known in Italy as Derby della Capitale) this Sunday and it is very likely to attract the attention of football Europe.
Allesandro Florenzi renewed his contract with AS Roma last week and warned Lazio that his team “will spit blood to win the Scudetto”. Rudi Garcia showed that he is a specialist and the won title with OSC Lille in France was not a lucky coincidence. After the 0-1 win against Udinese on Tuesday, Roma is taking the second position with a game advance and 39 points, same as the leaders from Juventus. After the win they have put the pressure on Juve, who had to host Inter on Tuesday night. Adem Ljaic was injured at Stadio Friuli and it is not clear if he will be available for the derby against Lazio. Gervinho won’t be available as well as the player left to Africa, where his Ivory Coast will participate in Africa Cup of Nations 2015 tournament.
Lazio has won the battle for the third place against Sampdoria on Monday with the convincing 3-0. With the three points won, The Roman Eagles moved to the third place, 9 points behind their rivals from Roma. Felipe Anderson’s great performance was in the basis of this win after the Brazilian midfielder scored a 27 meters stunning goal in the Viviano’s bottom corner and provided a great assist to Filip Djordjevic after a solid run for the third goal. With the success against Sampdoria, the eagles are now in a 6 game series without a defeat. Stefano Pioli does not have any players leaving for the Africa Cup of Nations or any serious injuries.
Totti, Totti, Totti!
Interesting fact is that Francesco Totti is the player to appear most times in this derby (34 times) and he can break his own record if he appeared on the pitch this Sunday against Lazio. The Brazilian Dino Da Costa who wore AS Roma’s shirt in the period between 1955-1961 has scored 11 goals, which makes him top goal scorer in the Derby della Capitale and the top goal scorer for Lazio is Silvio Piola with 7 goals. Vincenco Montella is the player to hold the record for most goals scored in this derby. He has scored 4 goals for the 5-1 Roma win in 2002. The Swedish Arne Selmosson remains the only player to score for both clubs in this derby, first for Lazio and then for AS Roma.
Who will triumph in Rome?
The Wolves have managed to win 14 of the last 32 games between these sides against 8 Lazio wins and 10 draws.
