Liverpool vs Tottenham

by Jacek Staszak on Premier League

It was the game against Liverpool that got Andre Villas-Boas fired from Tottenham. Spurs have lost 0-5 and showed no tactical nous whatsoever. What was worse, it seemed that the players didn’t have a clue what to do and looked like they weren’t motivated. The fans and the board wanted no more of this and decided to give the job to Tim Sherwood.

Liverpool’s attack – Rodgers’ secret weapon

Although the first games were encouraging, Tottenham throughout the season showed that they’re not a Champions League material and have to wait another year to be amongst the teams fighting for a place in Top 4.

Liverpool on the other hand have the most successful season in a long time. To put both teams seasons in perspective, The Reds have scored 11 more goals in the first-half this season than Spurs have in the whole of the season.

Brendan Rodgers’ side play beautiful one-touch football with a lot of pressing and make the most of their offensive talent utilising speed and creativity of Luis Suarez, Daniel Sturridge and Philippe Coutinho trio. They have some problems in defence, but it’s the attack that makes Liverpool prevail in most games.

Premier League is a league with a lot of focus on attack and most of the teams have lost the idea of defending. That makes Liverpool a very dangerous team. Even those that struggle with relegation fight tend to defend high which gives a lot of space behind the defence. An ultra-high defensive line was part of AVB’s Tottenham losses this season. Sherwood looks to have a similar approach to defending. It backfired in games against Chelsea and Arsenal this month and if he does play the same way at Anfield he might be in a surprise.

Total football – now in Liverpool, tomorrow in London?

It might be the final nail in his coffin. Although he has a 18 month contract, he is set to be replaced by Louis van Gaal who has stated many times that he’d like to be a manager in the Premier League and bring his Totalvoetbal ideas to England.

But now, it’s Rodgers that shows this kind of football and he does this using many formations although now it seems that he’s set on using a 4-4-2 diamond formation which enables him to put his best players on field. Under the Irishman, Liverpool are a title challenger and although they have to play both Manchester City and Chelsea, they’ll play those games at Anfield. At home, they’ve beaten Arsenal 5-1. In fact, in their last seven games, in which they’ve won all of them, they have scored 26 goals. That’s almost four goals per game.

Tottenham have suffered an injury crisis lately and only recently they’re recovering from it. Emmanuel Adebayor will probably return to the squad although Christian Eriksen has struck a good partnership with Roberto Soldado. Michael Dawson and Vlad Chiriches have returned to training but Sherwood will stick with Jan Vertonghen and Younes Kaboul in centre of defense until the former two return to full fitness.

When it comes to Liverpool, it looks like that Raheem Sterling will return to the side. The young Englishman have shined in reverse fixture and Rodgers might use his speed to attack Spurs’ high line.
