Liverpool vs Manchester City
by Colin on Premier League
We are entering March with an amazing game between the teams of Liverpool and Manchester City at Anfield this Sunday. Both teams played during the week in the European competitions and now are focused on the game at Anfield.
The hosts from Liverpool have improved their form recently and are taking the 6th position at the table with 45 points just one behind the 5th Southampton. The Reds last win at the St. Mary’s Stadium against the Saints with 0-2 was very important for the team letting them to get more closer to the big 4. Now Liverpool’s difference to the 4th Manchester United is only 3 points.
The Istanbul win
The Reds from Merseyside traveled to Istanbul in their second leg game for the UEFA Europa League against Besiktas. The first game has finished with 1-0 for Liverpool after Mario Balotelli has scored from a penalty in the 85th minute. Now 10 years later after they’ve played one of the best games in their history in Istanbul at the same stadium The Reds were back. For those who don’t remember, 10 years ago Liverpool faced AC Milan in Istanbul for the UEFA Champions League final. AC Milan was leading 3-0 at the half time and it looked almost impossible for Liverpool to do anything to change the result. Although the team lead back then by Rafael Benitez came out for the second half with a different idea. Just between the 54th and the 60th minute, the reds managed to equalize and to make it 3-3 and to lead the game to penalties. After the shoot out the luck was on the side of Liverpool and they took the trophy to Anfield.
The Istanbul fail
Now the things looked different after Liverpool failed to stay in the Champions League and had to play in Europa League. The Turkish side has won the game with 1-0 and took the game to extra time. After the ET the result was the same and 10 years later Liverpool had to go through penalties at this stadium again. Unfortunately for the reds’ fans this time the luck was not on their side and they had to leave the tournament after Dejan Lovren has missed the decisive penalty.
Man City reaching the top
Manchester City are taking the 2nd position of the table with 55 points, 5 behind the leaders Chelsea, 7 advantage before the third Arsenal and 10 ahead of their opponents in this game Liverpool. The Citizens ripped Newcastle’s heads in the last round by beating them with 5-0 and David Silva was the man of the match remembering his best days.
The sky blues played in Tuesday in their Champions League game against Barcelona at the Etihad. Just an year earlier they were beaten by the same opponent with 0-2 in Manchester. Now the result was 1-2 for Barcelona, after Luis Suarez scored twice and showed that it’s much easier for him to score in England. City were lucky to keep this result, because the Catalonian side had many chances to make the result even worse for the hosts. In the final 90th minute Lionel Messi missed a penalty, but the guests still can be happy with the final result.
In the last few years the game between Liverpool and Manchester City became even more interesting, after Abu Dhabi Group bought the club from Manchester. It’s interesting how the finances can change a club and it’s history. Liverpool is one of the most successful sides in England, but they have never won the Premier League. Manchester City did it twice after the arriving of Sheikh Mansour and the team plays regularly in the Champions League.
Man City will have to reach deep to win
Man City’s last win at Anfield comes from 2003rd with 1-2. Since then these teams have played against each other 23 times in the Premier League. These 23 games have finished with 9 wins for Liverpool, 9 draws and 5 wins for Manchester City. In general, the reds are much more successful in this clash with their 82 wins against 44 for City and 44 draws. The Citizen’s wins at Merseysides home are 13 against 47 for the hosts.
