Liverpool vs Arsenal
by Colin on Premier League
In one of the oldest derbies in the English football game, Liverpool will host Arsenal at Anfield Road this Sunday.
The Reds from Merseyside are not enjoying a good form in the Premier League after having won only 2 of their last 6 Premier League games. Also, Liverpool has finished third in the group and failed to qualify for the Champions League knockout stage. Thus, the team will represent England in the UEFA Europa League and the draw crossed their way with the Turkish Besiktas. The Istanbul grand already played with few English teams this season, while first they had to face Arsenal in a direct game for qualifying the Champions League which was lost from them. In the Europa League group stage they had to face Arsenal’s neighbors from North London Tottenham and now they got Liverpool for the first knockout stage.
11th in the table
In the last week the Liverpool had to travel to their rivals from Old Trafford, Manchester United for another old English derby. Liverpool had their chances, but after 90 minutes of play the result was 3-0 for the Red Devils. The team suffers from their attack, something that they did more than better in the last season, but with Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge in front. Now none of them is available, while Suarez left the club in the summer and Daniel Sturridge is injured and no close to return back to the first squad at all. Mario Balotelli was given time to adapt to the team after his transfer from AC Milan, but it seems that there is no progress with him and he can’t contribute to his new team. The Italian haven’t scored a goal in the Premier League for Liverpool year this season.
Liverpool is now taking the 11th place in the table with 21 points and their neighbors from Everton are with the same amount points, but still one position ahead because their better goal difference. Liverpool played midweek against the leader of the Championship AFC Bournemouth in a game of the Capital One Cup tournament. The Reds have won their visit to The Cherries with 1-3 after two Raheem Sterling and one Lazar Markovic goals. They will have to face Chelsea in the semi-finals.
Arsenal is on the way to stabilize their form and the team is taking the 6th position and 26 points, before their visit to Anfield. After the disappointing result at Stoke, Arsenal hosted Newcastle last Saturday just few days after the convincing win in Istanbul against Galatasaray with 1-4.The Gunners repeated the exercise against The Geordies and took the three points after 4-1 with two goals of Olivier Giroud and two goals of the birthday boy Santi Cazorla. In the top 5 goals of the 16th round, Giroud’s both goals were among the best. The first came after an excellent cross from Alexis Sanchez and great header by the Frenchman and the second was scored after low cross from the youngster Hector Bellerin with a very fine touch from Olivier. After this win Arsenal are keeping close to top 4 and only 2 points behind the fourth West Ham United.
The week was good for Arsenal and because of the Champions League draw which sent them to play against the French AS Monaco. On such big football stage there is no place for underestimation, although this is a relief for Arsene Wenger’s boys after they had to face Bayern Munich for the last two years and Barcelona twice before that.
Arsenal has lost their last visit to Anfield with 5-1 in February, but just a bit more about week later they managed to return it by winning 2-1 at home for the FA Cup. Many believe that this was the game to give Arsenal the needed confidence and to inspire them for winning the oldest football trophy in the world last season.
In numbers Liverpool wins in this derby are 83 against 78 for Arsenal and 56 draws. It has to be said that despite the defeat at Anfield in February, Arsenal is not used to lose their games at this stadium in the last couple of years. Before the last catastrophic result Arsenal’s last 7 visits to Merseyside have finished with 3 wins and 4 draws.
