Everton vs Manchester United

by Jacek Staszak on Premier League

Everton continue their fight “for footballing dream” – reaching the Champions League spot and host Manchester United in what will be an emotional return for David Moyes to Goodison Park.

A lot has changed

The farewell was indeed an emotional one and there was a sense that without Moyes’ and effort to build a solid club structure Everton are going to be at most a mid-table side especially when Bill Kenwright appointed Roberto Martinez as manager. The Spaniard had no experience whatsoever in managing a team of Everton’s reputation and has just been relegated with Wigan.

Since then, a lot has changed. United are not fighting for championship and likely to play in next season’s Europa League whereas Everton are close to finish fourth which will give them an opportunity to play in Champions League. Martinez’s progressive football philosophy has changed the Toffees and gave them more dimensions in every aspect of their play.

Too defensive to win at home

Moyes’ defensive mindset established at the Goodison Park is not working at Old Trafford. Whilst United’s squad looks stronger than last season’s Everton’s, they have almost the same results and many fans and pundits are concerned with the way that Moyes’ team play. It’s too conservative, too sluggish, too many wing play. It may work on the road where United are better this season – they have the best away record in the league, but at home not creating many chances with lots of possession is a recipe for failure.

Top side Everton FC

It was the scenario when both of these teams met on December. Everton played their usual game with patient build-up and United were impatient in almost every aspect. Eventually, patience prevailed and Bryan Oviedo scored the winner for Everton with four minutes to go. It was after that victory when Everton were started to be seriously considered as a team that might upset the odds and finish at least fourth in the Premier League.

They have now won all of their seven last games and they’ve managed to beat Arsenal 3-0 at home in a game that put Toffees in the driver’s seat in the race for Top 4.. They have much tougher fixtures than the Gunners with title-contenders Manchester City coming to Goodison Park on 3rd May. The red side of Merseyside has managed to beat The Citizens last Sunday and gave Everton some hope in the run-in.. Now its only up to them. Beating Manchester United will be a perfect start to an emotional roller-coaster – the last three games.
