Borussia Dortmund vs VFL Wolfsburg
by Colin on Bundesliga
Having finished with their European games for this calendar year, Borussia Dortmund and Wolfsburg are focusing back on the domestic Bundesliga. On Wednesday night VFL Wolfsburg will travel to Signal Iduna Park in Dortmund for the 16th round game in the Bundesliga.
The Wolves are taking the second place in the table with 30 points, 9 behind the leader Bayern Munich. The team is having a very good season so far, probably their best in the last few years after they managed to win the Bundesliga for the first time in their history in 2008-2009 season. The team is also competing in the Europa League and Dieter Hecking’s boys successfully passed the group stage. The Monday draw put them to face Sporting Lisbon in the knockout phase. The Portuguese side has finished third in their Champions League group and it will continue their participation in the Europa League tournament.
Some fresh transfers in the summer helped the team to be where it is now just like Kevin de Bruyne who is enjoying a great season after he moved to the Germans from Chelsea. Ivan Perisic and Ricardo Rodriguez are just two of the players who are performing great this season. Nicklas Bendtner came in from Arsenal, but he is still struggling with his form and doesn’t get much of a first team football. The team has finished surprisingly with a 1-1 draw against the greener Paderborn. The Wolves missed plenty of chances in front of the goal and had to reconcile with the point.
BVB still not well
Borussia Dortmund, on the other side, is in the relegation zone again after the last round. The team lost the visit to Berlin against the home side Hertha. Jurgen Klopp complained that his players may actually not understand how serious the situation in the club is. BVB has won only 4 of the 15 games and lost 9, which puts them on the 16th position with 14 points. The team is playing with completely different mood in the Champions League where the team took the first place in their group with the same points as Arsenal, but with better goal difference. Bad news for the team are that Henrikh Mkhitaryan will be out for 6 weeks after he got injured in Berlin.
The Champions League draw defined Borussia to play against the Italian Juventus in February and March and according to the CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke the chances for both teams are equal.
For the statistics Borussia Dortmund managed to win against VFL Wolfsburg 16 times and the draw 8 games. Wolfsburg won only 8 times so far. It is time for the black and yellows to wake up in the Bundesliga and to start winning their points. The Wolves gave a signal against Paderborn that despite the team is playing very attractive and aggressive football it experiences difficulties to score and to materialize their superiority and good game.
It will definitely be an interesting game for both sides and BVB fans will cheer loudly to show their continuous support for their team.
