Barcelona vs Atletico Madrid
by Colin on La Liga
This Sunday Barcelona will host Atletico Madrid at Camp Nou. The Catalonians have started the year with a minimal defeat from Real Sociedad and David Moyes, who claimed this was his best night in Spain since he arrived.
The Big Three dissapoints?
There were rumours last few days coming from Barca’s changing room that the Argentinian superstar Leo Messi criticized the manager Luis Enrique. The only good thing in the last round of Primera for FC Barcelona was that their biggest rivals from Real Madrid also conceded points at Mestaya against Valencia, after 22 consecutive wins in all competitions. Many were expecting that the Catalonians will be explosive in attack with the trio Messi, Neymar and Suarez, but so far in the season this does not seem to be true. Very few could have thought that Blaugranes will experience difficulties in front of the goal with these three players. The good results early this season were because of the Lionel Messi’s genius and he managed to brake many records like the one for most scored goals in Primera Division and the Champions League. In BBVA, the Catalonians take the second position with 38 points and just a point behind the leaders Real Madrid and a game advance.
Torres is back!
Atletico Madrid are enjoying a good run and Antoine Griezmann finds his form after his transfer from Real Sociedad in the summer. The French has scored twice for the 3-1 over Levante in the last round. The biggest new for Atletico was that Fernando Torres is back to his home club. The Spaniard played for Atletico in the period 2001-2007, scored 91 goals in all competitions and was appointed as captain at the age of 19. After his 6 years stay at the first team he was transferred to Liverpool where he played at his best. After 3 season and a half at Anfield he made a 50m EUR record move to join Chelsea, where Torres struggled to show his class. Just after the New Year the Blues have reached an agreement with AC Milan for his permanent free transfer. From AC Milan offered the player to „The Mattressers” in order to replace him with Alessio Cerci, who came at San Siro. During the week 45 000 people welcomed their hero back to Vicente Calderon and made Fernando Torres return very emotional.
Real? Barca? Atletico!
Barcelona and Atletico Madrid closed the last season with 1-1 draw at Camp Nou and determined who the Spanish champion becomes in May, 17th 2014. Atletico Madrid did something unthinkable under the management of Diego Simeone and broke the hegemony of Real Madrid and Barcelona to win the trophy of BBVA for the 10th time in their history. Later on they faced Real Madrid in the final of the Champions League lost by them in the extra time.
Atletico managed to get only one win in 10 games against their opponents and to lose 7. Except the draw at Camp Nou in May, „El Atleti” have lost their last 5 visits to this stadium.
