Arsenal vs Newcastle United

by Colin on Premier League

In the latest game this Saturday in the Premier League 16th round, Newcastle United will travel to North London, where Alan Pardew’s boys will have to face Arsenal in a fight for the top positions.

Easy trip to Turkey

Arsenal played during the week in the Champions League against the Turkish Grand, Galatasaray. The Gunners traveled to Istanbul and the team was easy as they have secured their place in the knock-out stage earlier. Arsene Wenger played mostly footballers who don’t get much of a chance this season. Lukas Podolski stayed on the pitch for the whole 90 minutes and he paid off for his manager’s trust by scoring the first and the last goals for the final 1-4. The Welsh International Aaron Ramsey added two goals between and he will be remembered about his second goal – a 30 yard stunning half-volley into the top corner. Maitland-Niles, Stefan O’Connor and Gedion Zelalem have made their official debuts in a competitive game. Newcastle’s former right back Mathieu Debuchy was back again in the starting eleven three months after he got injured against Manchester City in September. The French International was transferred in the summer after the World Cup in Brazil to replace Bacary Sagna who left for Manchester City.

Arsenal alternate win and lose after they have lost their game against Stoke City at Britannia Stadium last Saturday. The team always experiences difficulties on this stadium against their though opponents from Stoke. This time was no different with 3-0 on the half time. In the second half they gave hope to the fans, after a penalty goal scored from Santi Cazorla and one from Aaron Ramsey, but they were left a man down after Calum Chambers was sent off for his second yellow card. The Gunners are currently holding the 6th position in the Premier League with 23 points with 6 wins, 5 draws and 4 losses, the same as Newcastle United. The goal difference is what gives advantage in the ranking for Arsenal before this round, while Arsenal goals are +6 and -1 for The Geordies.

Tough start for #NUFC

Newcastle had to taste the bitter of the Premier League in the beginning of the season and the fans were shouting and bringing posters with „Pardew Out!” for their manager. Now, after 15 games the things look calmer for the club and the entourage. Manchester City was defeated at their Etihad in the League Cup, then Liverpool at home after 1-0 win and the leader Chelsea was the last victim at St. James’ Park. Newcastle hosted the blues from London after they were unbeaten before their visit to The Geordies. Chelsea was the team to attack more, but this was no surprise to anyone. Newcastle waited for their chance patiently and it came in the 57th minute when Papiss Cisse scored after an excellent counter-attack and 20 minutes later he repeated the exercise. After the second goal United were left man down after a red card given to Steven Taylor. Didier Drogba scored just few minutes after in the 83rd minute, just to make the fans on the stadium to shake, but Newcastle took the three point at the end.

Stats favour The Gunners

Newcastle is one of those teams who can outperform and make the day difficult for the big clubs. So far in the season they have proved it a couple of times. Arsenal on the other side is one of the constant teams in their performances against The Magpies. Newcastle grabbed the three points at the Emirates Stadium for the first and only time in 2010 after Andy Carrol’s goal. This is the only win for Newcastle against Arsenal in 14 games in the Premier League. In this period Arsenal has won 8 times and 5 of the games are draws. Although there were some interesting results between these teams like the 4-4 draw in 2011. Then, Arsenal scored 4 goals in the first half and when no one believed that it’s possible Newcastle rose from the dead to score 4 goals and to take well deserved point. The Gunners enjoy a 5 consecutive wins against their opponent, 3 at home and 2 away. Very interesting result happened in 2012 at the Emirates Stadium, when Newcastle started the game with the attacking duo Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse, but left a lot of space in the back for Arsenal which led to a 7-3 result to the home side.
