Arsenal vs Aston Villa

by Kimi Nguyen on Premier League

Arsene Wenger kicks off his 18th season in the Premier League, meeting Paul Lambert’s Aston Villa, with many things at the back of his mind.

18th year in the Premier League, 8th year without a trophy

Arsenal had an almost-perfect pre-season tour, having only lost the Emirates cup at home to Galatasaray. However, the Gooners have more reasons to worry as Arsene Wenger has not spent anything from the £72m ‘WarChest’ transfer budget. Gotten rid of Andrei Arshavin, Gervinho and Marouane Chamakh, the Professor is still struggling to make a mega signing before the transfer deadline. Luis Gustavo (Bayern Munich), and Luis Suarez (Liverpool) are the targets at the moment.

Last year’s poor performance is a blessing in disguise for Aston Villa. £25m-rated forward Christian Benteke has become the most sought-after asset in Premier League, having scored 19 goals in 34 appearances. Also, Aston Villa is on the process of squad-rebuilding with many youngsters emerging from the academy. The reinforcement of 5 under-23 transfer over the summer (Bacuna, Okore, Helenius, Tonev and Luna) testified this movement.

With the squad’s average age of 23.3 – youngest in the league- things are getting more and more exciting for Aston Villa.

Betegy’s Prediction

4 days after meeting Aston Villa, Arsenal will travel to Turkey to face Fenerbahce for the UEFA Champions League playoff.

Aston Villa will head to Arsenal next week with few injury worries and players on international duty. Moreover, the schedule sees Villa facing Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool inside the opening seven days. A tall order for the young squad.
